Are you looking for ways to improve your community for the better? If yes, your community needs to provide services that enhance the education of students in the community. When a community is moderately educated, the lives of residents improve. A great way to improve the education of a community is to offer a homework club that provides quality tutoring and other educational assistance to help students in the community succeed. This article will tell you about the non-profit Homes For America’s Homework Club and how Rapid Success Tutoring is involved in improving community living through educational tutoring.
What Is Homes for America?
Homes for America is a non-profit housing organization that creates and preserves affordable housing and provides services that enhance the lives of it’s residents. The non-profit was founded in 1994. It is located in Annapolis and develops housing throughout Mid-Atlantic States. Today in 2012, Homes for America is ranked the 12th largest nonprofit developer of affordable housing in the nation and the organization has been recognized in national and local awards for the its quality of housing and supportive services.
Rapid Success Tutoring’s Positive Involvement With Homes for America
Rapid Success Tutoring is a team player in helping create and preserve thriving, sustainable communities with Homes for America through an after school tutoring program for Homes at the Glen, a lease purchase community owned Homes for America. The after school program is called the Homework Club.
The Homework club was initiated in November 2009 to tutor kindergarten to high school students who reside at Homes at the Glen. Rapid Success teachers and tutors provide tutoring Monday through Thursday for 1.5 hours a day. Activities include educational games and assisting children in homework. Students are also given snacks during the program and they have the opportunity to earn club bucks for following the rules. Club bucks are exchanged for school supply rewards.
Since Rapid Success Tutoring has been involved with the program, regular and strong attendance has grown to 15 – 18 youth each session.
The Homework Club has a computer access center with high speed internet and a small library available to students. The Homework club provides a strong support network and focuses intensively on the academic achievement of students. The Homework Club is a safe environment.
Rapid Success Tutoring Founder, Stephanie Turnbach, truly enjoys being involved in the Homework Club. Turnbach states:
“ Giving back to the community makes me happy. The Homework club is an amazing program. I wish more communities were given the opportunity right in their backyards.”
She enjoys the Homework Club so much that she has her two daughters, both girl scouts; get involved in helping the children. Turbach’s daughters have made colored stockings filled with donated supplies for the children at the Homework Club during the holidays and participated with the Gaylord Hotels in donating warm jackets to students for the winter.
The Homework Club also provides guest speakers to motivate students to follow their dreams and succeed in their academic goals. Some guest speakers for Black History month have been Rob Levit, musician and founder of Creating communities and Krystal Appiah, Research Archivist/IMLS Fellow of Maryland State Archives. In the last week of February’s Black History Month, football player Kelly Washington will be a guest speaker.
Working parents truly appreciate and rely on the safe environment the Homework club provides to students in the community.

Are you looking for ways to be a better test taker? If yes, we are here to help by providing you tips on reducing test taking anxiety. Read below to get started.
What is test anxiety?
Test anxiety is when a test taker worries about doing well on a test. Worrying about performance can harm test performance and memory. Here are some ways to reduce test taking anxiety:
- Be prepared for the test. The more prepared you are to take the test, the less anxiety you will suffer from when it is time to take the test.
- Start studying a few days or weeks before the exam. Never cram studying last minute.
- Stay positive. If you have a positive attitude, you are more inclined to test successfully.
- Exercise. Exercising can help you reduce stress before test taking.
- Get a good night sleep. When you rest well, your brain and body perform better.
- Show up to your test early. Do not run in late or come a minute before the test. Be there 30 minutes before testing. You can then review right before taking the test; this will allow you to the materials that will be on the test fresh on your mind.
- Read your directions slowly, carefully and skim the test before starting to pace yourself appropriately while taking the test.

Are you looking for ways to help your child excel in school? If yes, we are here to help you by providing four great studying habits to start in this New Year. Read below to get started.
It is never too late for your child to develop great study habits. Strong study habits will help your child improve his or her grades and school performance. Here are some must-do studying habits your child should try this year:
Write Down All Assignments
Your child should write out all assignments on a planner or a note pad (a digital note pad or a paper note pad both work). The Assignments should be listed with due dates, test dates, and tasks.
Bring Homework to School
Many children that receive F’s in school are the children who forget to do assignments and study. Homework should be put in a special folder and your child should have a homework station to do the assignments.
Communicate With Your Child’s Teacher
There should be clear communication between you, your child and your child’s teacher. When there is a lack of communication your child will suffer from bad grades, even if your child puts in good effort. You do not want your child to receive a bad grade because he or she did not understand the assignment.
It is always better to ask questions than be silent. When you and your child ask questions, your child will become more prepared to succeed in school.
Color Code to Get Organized
Help your child use color-coding to stay organize with assignments and preparing test. Have each class be labeled with a single color. Use color folders, highlighters, sticky notes and pens. Color coding is very helpful for your child to use especially for research projects and papers.

Finals can be the make or break for your child succeeding at his or her learning objectives or struggle to a point your child fails every course. Your child can succeed by eating smart. You are what you eat is a true statement. When your child eats healthy, your child can perform mentally and physically better.
Prevent your Child from eating his or her feelings.
When your child is studying for a language final such as French or Spanish, make sure your child does not go straight for the ice cream to help him or her study. This is called ‘eating your feelings’ because the stress of studying makes your child seek sweets rather than healthy food.
You should look for signs whether your child is eating out of boredom, depression, and self-pity or out of real hunger. Yes, your child can have treats but do not let him or her always eat a pint of ice cream while studying, choose healthier snacks such as fruits, vegetables, or yogurt. These types of food will trigger positive moods for your child rather than a bad mood while studying.
Watch for Signs that your child may be starving or stuffing his or her self.
We are not talking about your child piling his or her Thanksgiving plate with food. We are talking about continuous eating patterns where your child over eats after a day of depriving his or her self of food during the school day or during studying.
Often children will under eat and then over indulge, especially during the holidays. A healthier habit you should help your child implement into his or her eating habit is keeping healthy foods on the go with him or her at all times. These healthy foods are called brain food. Some brain foods are raisins, almonds, and trail mix.
